The Republic of Kazakhstan – for us, colossal opportunities and new projects

For the fifth time in a row Neotech has taken part in the largest oil industry forum on post-soviet territory – the Kazakhstan KIOGE 2008 exposition, which ran October 7–10 in the city of Almaty.
We asked Neotech director of sales and marketing Yuri Patchko to share his impressions of the trip and participation in the exposition.
What were the goals of Neotech’s participation in the exposition?
In attending the exposition, as a rule we pursue several goals at once.
First and foremost we visit the booths of partners with whom we have worked for many years in Kazakhstan, visiting face to face with those with whom we are involved in joint projects, and learning about their plans for the future.
Secondly, we try to find new opportunities, make new acquaintances, and learn about prospects for developing various projects.
And, thirdly and lastly, together with our local employees, especially with project managers, we discuss in detail models for joint efforts towards expanding our presence in the region. Having had a full-fledged branch in the Republic of Kazakhstan since 2005, we believe that the experience accumulated and knowledge acquired of the local market, particularly in the sphere of translation services, enable us to do this quickly and with maximal efficiency.
How did the KIOGE 2008 exposition differ from those previous?
My chief observation from visiting the exposition is that  it has acquired a more business-like nature than the trendy nature characteristic of KIOGE-2006 and KIOGE-2007. The individual presentation and operational organization of the booths of most of the exposition’s participants – oil and gas operators, engineering companies – were aimed not just at making advertising or trendy statements about their presence in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Rather, their goal was to share positive experience gained, tell about specific projects, and present their own prepared solutions and new technological capabilities. We saw that the exposition was aimed not at creating a consciousness of prospective projects and possible suppliers, technologies, or equipment. No; one sensed a business-like atmosphere and a drive to use to maximal advantage the opportunities provided by the exposition for establishing professional contacts, and solving specific problems and tasks related to accomplishing current projects. At present on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan several dozen oil and gas projects are being implemented, several of them of astounding scope. It’s worth mentioning in passing that the relatively new field Karachaganak, which entire consortiums of western companies are currently beginning to actively exploit, is one of the largest in the world.
What would you say was the most important result of your trip?
The most important result and consequence were the confirmation of the rightness of our prospective plans. According to our observations, if in previous years Almaty has been the center of business activity, a different trend has recently been in evidence. The main fields and largest projects today are realized in the Caspian Sea region, which is quite far from the former capital of Kazakhstan.  This means that the fostering of new business connections is increasingly being transferred to regions proximal to oilfields and to the Republic’s new capital – the city of Astana. As a result, many companies, including Neotech, have begun to think seriously about their presence in the regions. This is entirely in keeping with the business plans of our regional development in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
