Case 1

Over the course of several years our company has been providing support for translation of documentation for modernization of an oil refinery.  In the engineering phase the document flow was fairly large: project and labor documentation, blueprints, specifications, equipment descriptions, and correspondence on technical and managerial issues.  Close work with the customer at the early stage included confirmation of terminology, preparation of a glossary, and project memory (TM) accumulation.  In time, edited versions were formed, permitting us to refer to previous translations and significantly reduce the time and cost of filling orders.

For work on this project a manager was assigned and a special work group was created, comprising translators, technical editors, and junior editors versed in the specifics of the documents received, making the group fully autonomous.  This solution was not just constructed on the basis of previous project experience: many nuances, such as translation and formulation of edits of documents and hand-written comments on blueprints or the process of translating PDF-format blueprints were submitted for discussion in course of the work.  This made it possible not only to fulfill all of the customer’s requirements, but even to anticipate subsequent issues at the stage when the document flow became more or less controlled and predictable.

To date, this project is considered one of our most successful.  The order processing procedure and the completely autonomous project group which were employed and made a good showing make it possible to react without delay to any, even the most complicated, customer requirements.  Based on the experience of this project, the creation of permanent groups for managing major projects continues to be regularly practiced.
